About this game

Square's 1997 PlayStation game, where the series left sprites behind for 3D models standing on pre-rendered painted backgrounds. It starts with a job: blow up a reactor belonging to the company draining the planet to sell the result as electricity. Magic is not learned but slotted, in orbs called Materia you socket into your gear, so a character is only what you have bolted onto them that morning and any of them can be anything. It is also stuffed with minigames, enough that the game stops being an RPG for stretches at a time. The character models show their age; the painted backgrounds they stand on do not.
