About this game

Nintendo's 1996 launch game for the N64, one of the first 3D platformers and the one built around the machine's new analogue stick. The analogue stick reads a full circle of directions rather than eight, so Mario walks, creeps and sprints depending on how far you push. The whole moveset, the triple jump, the wall kick, the long jump, is built on that. Peach's castle is a hub you unlock with the stars you collect, fifteen courses behind its walls and paintings, seven stars in each. The camera belongs to a character flying alongside you, a Lakitu filming from a rod, and it is the part that has aged: steering him is a skill the game expects you to pick up. The moveset has not aged at all: every one of those jumps comes out of how far and how fast you push the stick, and that is as good to handle now as it ever was.
