About this game

Konami's 1997 PlayStation game, and the one that stopped Castlevania being a set of levels. You play Alucard, Dracula's half human son, in one connected castle where most doors are shut until you have the thing that opens them, including turning into a bat, a wolf or mist. On top of that it runs an experience bar: enemies give levels, levels give strength, constitution, intelligence and luck, and the floor is covered in equipment. Those two ideas together, an interconnected map and a character sheet, are what almost everything called a Metroidvania has used since. Almost nothing in the castle is wasted: a corridor that leads nowhere has usually handed you a weapon or a relic by the time you turn round.
