About this game
Blizzard's 2002 strategy game, four races rather than two, and the one where the series put a named hero at the head of the army. Heroes earn experience from kills, level to ten, carry items and learn spells of their own. Upkeep is the other change: past a certain number of units your gold income drops, so the game pushes you towards a small, well used army instead of a flood. The map between the bases is not empty either, since neutral monsters guard the good spots and killing them is how a hero levels early. Its map editor is where Defense of the Ancients was made, and the whole MOBA genre came out of that one custom map. Upkeep is also why a battle is still worth thinking about: an army you cannot replace cheaply is one you look after, so losing a hero costs more than the units around him.
